Diamante stones sometimes called rhinestones - are imitation diamonds made from rock crystals or glass. Originally gathered from the river Rhine - hence the name - the stones are coated on one side with a special metal powder which transforms them into "faux" diamonds, which even manage to capture the dazzle of real diamonds. Aurora Borealis rhinestones, named after the Aurora Borealis Northern Lights atmospheric penonmenon were first created in 1955. Although clear, they have an irridescent quality which gives the stones a pale rainbow effect. Crystal rhinestones are produced mainly in Austria by Swarovski, in the Czech Republic and in a few Glassworks in Northern Bohemia.
