Daniel Swarovski (1862-1956) was born in Bohemia, the centre of the glass industry. He trained in his father's glass cutting factory where he became determined to automate the process. By 1892 he had designed the first electric machine to cut glass gemstones with perfect precision. He now moved to Austria, set up a factory and developed the unique grinding and polishing process that created a superior gemstone that became wildly in demand all over the world. Swarovski now expanded into glass manufacturing and by 1912, as well as the famous clear crystals, began producing a revolutionary range of colours. Today the finest cut crystal glass still comes from the Swarovski factory in Austria and Mad About Jewellery have been fortunate in acquiring some superb examples of their work. The jewellery in the sections below contains Swarovski's superior quality crystal gemstones. |
