Fortune Smiles on the Brave

Our wonderfully loyal customers are definitely due another special offer. With around 2,000 products on the site, it’s a tough call! I’ve already done an offer on toe rings and the new shipment of anklets is currently somewhere over the Atlantic, so best not tempt fate and UPS by promising the earth at a knock down price and coming up with nada, until they get here.
Then I get a bolt of inspiration. Isn’t there a Summer blockbuster to hand that we could link to? There is, too! GI Joe. The Rise of Cobra. Reportedly cost $175 million to make and full of spectacular special effects, action and deadly plots it’s gotta be the perfect vehicle for a special offer on our Action Man Dog Tags.
Further investigation into the film, shows the critics’ reviews are snippy – not the least because Paramount refused to let them see the film until it came out! But hey, this strategy seems to have worked brilliantly because the film grossed $56 million in its first week in the US and despite scorching reviews, the GI Joe Ticket buyers I saw being interviewed seemed well happy. So I decided to check it out for myself.
The plot’s fairly simple. The GI Joes are an elite international squad of soldiers with awesome weaponry, fearsome names, like Hawk, Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, Ripcord and a secret base near the Pyramids. Cobra is an international body of villains with dodgy accents and an underwater base in the Arctic. The plot, and I use the term loosely, centres around Cobra’s plans to steal NATO’s latest weapon.
Johnathan Pryce and Sienna Miller grace the cast and Dr Who fans have the added bonus of seeing ninth Dr. Who, Christopher Eccleston, playing not one, but two major villains. Sitting there in the darkened theatre, following endless spectacular chases, with special effects leaping out of every pixel and high-decibel explosions resounding around the walls, it was approximately 20 minutes before I began to long for a serious plot and acting. But then, I thought about GI Joe’s mission – to provide moviegoers with bangs for their bucks. In this, I have to say, it succeeds admirably. I also checked out the faces of the film’s main target audience all around me, so totally wrapped up in the film that buckets of popcorn and over-size beakers of Coke were forgotten. So I decided to watch the remaining 88 minutes of the film through the eyes of an 12 year-old boy. And do you know what? From that perspective, it’s totally awesome! Well worthy to be the No.1 Summer fun movie of 2009! Just hope we’ve got sufficient Action Man Dog Tags in stock!
