Fake Diamonds and Northern Lights
Posted on 01 September 2009
Like every industry the jewellery business has its own jargon and for the benefit of anyone who’s remotely interested, I thought I’d explain two two-letter jewellery terms that I’m constantly having to explain. I refer, of course, to AB and CZ.
Like most girls over the age of 3, I have to admit to a passion for everything that glitters, catches the light and draws attention to the wearer! Indeed, the Sales Team and I frequently lapse into absolute stupour at the sight of the latest diamante, crystal or Swarovski items stretched out ready to be packed. Talk about moths to a flame, rats to a drainpipe, lemmings to a cliff. And the more bling, the longer we’re mesmerised. Which brings me to the point – AB.
It stands for Aurora Borealis. Named after the Roman Goddess of Dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for North Wind, some people might know it better as Northern Lights. Either way, The Aurora Borealis is a phenomenon that produces spectacular rainbow ribbons of light at the North Pole. Obviously something ladies would like to see reflected in their jewellery! So to create the same trick of the light, the bottom of diamante crystals is silvered, producing a slightly more golden “jewel” that shimmers with the pastel colours of light.
CZ on the other hand, stands for Cubic Zirconium.
In its mineral form, Cubic Zirconium is very rare, however, it can be synthesised in a laboratory to simulate diamonds. Virtually indistinguishable from diamond with the naked eye, CZ has a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale compared to a diamond at 10. It is also 75% heavier. Visually flawless and colourless, Cubic Zirconia can be mixed with various oxides to create colour.
Have to say, diamonds might well be a girl’s best friend, but looking at some of the CZ jewellery in madaboutjewellery, I don’t know how you’d tell the difference, unless you’re a diamond merchant with a very expensive diamond testing machine in your pocket!!!!!
