Back in 1866, ornithologist Frank Chapman did some random research in New York and counted over 500 feathered hats on the heads of the city’s most well-heeled ladies. In the years that followed, feathers remained a firm favourite in the adorment stakes with both the famous and the fabulous.

Today, over a century after Frank’s head count, it’s time to join the fashion flock bigtime, as feathers once again dominate the world’s fashion shows and magazines, with models in plumed dresses, wearing feather accessories positively floating down the runways and grabbing major column inches.

As buyer for MAJ, it’s obviously my job to translate fashion trends into jewellery and in thinking about feathers it wasn’t a chasmic lateral leap to start thinking about those other ambassadors for feathers, Red Indians – especially as we have a dedicated Native American section on the website. I’m happy to say that section has now been expanded to include some seriously on trend (yet timeless) Sterling Silver feather necklaces and earrings designed and created in the Design Studios on the reservation in New Mexico. Happily, these are positively flying out!
