Lip Schtick

Posted on 12 March 2011

As history bears witness, when the going gets tough, the tough get loud mouths! Which is presumably what’s happening this year as the world of make-up gets decidedly lippy by sending us all in the direction of electric bright hues of raspberry, melon and magenta as Spring/Summer lips go defiantly and wonderfully loud and proud!

This is an inspired statement that allows anyone to update their entire look and persona for the price of a lipstick! In the name of research, for the past two days I’ve been trying out a bright red number which goes by the name of “Diva” and I have to admit, since I seem to be getting so much more attention these past two days, I think I’ve become one!

Without question, a bright lipstick does make you feel better. It lifts your face, adds a massive dose of glamour and even when you’re not wearing anything special, you look more dressed up.

You DO need to modify the way you apply these new bright colours though. A lip liner is essential for strong lips as it stops the colour bleeding and helps it last longer. And you need to take the lip pencil right into the corners, for a crisp outline. Personally, I also find it helps to “colour in” your lips with the liner before coating with at least two layers, as this anchors the lipstick. If you want a velvet matt finish, you can then coat your lipstick with a similar colour powder. Or for shine, add lip gloss – or a touch of Vaseline. For sheer girlie, glitz and glamour and to recapture the dressed-to-the-nines look that was Hollywood, I’ve found it really pays to wear rhinestone/diamante dangler earrings and a big mega-dazzling brooch, which, of course, is easy for me to say, considering MAJ has a warehouse full of mega-watt dazzling necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, bra-straps, anklets and so on!
