When you run a jewellery WEBsite complete with products such as Mademoiselle Tarantula and Crystal Creep, it’s impossible to ignore a ground-breaking item of clothing made by – take a chill pill all you arachnaphobics – spiders!
I refer, of course, to the spider silk scarf. This revolutionary product, the first ever item of clothing to made from spider silk textile, took one million spiders, 80 people and five years to create.
And before any well-meaning, insect welfare people take to their placards to protest against spider cruelty, I have it on good authority that the spiders worked a strict 9 – 5 day during which their silk was extracted by trained handlers and they were then let loose at the end of the day!
This unique scarf, alongside a matching golden cape, currently under construction in Madagascar, will be showcased at the V & A Museum in January 2012. .
To my mind, it’s just begging for our Fly-by-Night brooch!
