Maybe it was a little break in the gloom and doom of the current recession?  Or maybe people just wanted to share in the  wide-eyed wonder of so many small children who for this one night in the year found themselves dressed up in wicked costumes and allowed out in the dark for the purpose of knocking on strangers’ doors to ask for sweets?  Whatever it was, it felt like a couple of hours of pure magic and I can honestly say I have never seen quite so many children taking part.  I have also never seen so many imaginative costumes and inspired face painting.  I was also pleasantly surprised when it came to my turn to answer the door, because with the exception of two children, every other child politely selected just one item from the huge selection in the Halloween bowl before thanking me and moving on.  Several of the mums hanging around at the gateposts also complimented me on my own attempts at ghoul  – some rather fine stick-on  vampire teeth, with black lipstick and nails and Duke the Spook and Ever Ready Freddy on the lapels of my funereal long jacket.  In fact, several mums have expressed an interest in buying the brooches -  next year!
